Behaviour and body language



Type of the lesson: English practice
Age of students: 21-22 (4th-year students) 
General topic of the unit: Language
Topic of the class: Language in our life
Goals of the class: develop speaking and reading skills, improve listening skills, learn new vocabulary
Goals of the activity: reading, doing exercises and listening comprehension


 Greeting.
   
Warm-up activity
I ask students to tell 3-5 sentences on topic: "Language in our life". 

II Reading and discussing new vocabulary

Flutter your eyelashes - flirting (used of female behaviour towards a man);
Raise your or others` eyebrows - surprise or shock (either a person or behaviour can raise eyebrows);
Twitch - nervousness (repeated small movements with part of the body;
Flinch - pain or fear (sudden small movement);
Squirm - embarassment or nervousness (move from side to side on your chair in an awkward way);
Smirk - self-satisfaction (smile, negative associations);
Beam - happiness (broag smile, positive associations);
Sniff at something - disapproval (you also sniff when you have a funny nose);
Snort - disgust or great amusement (make an exploisive sound by forcing air quickly up or down the nose);
Titter - nervousness or embarassment (small laugh).

Students make their own sentences using new vocabulary.

IV Doing exercises

Circle the best of the two underlined words to complete each of these sentences.

1. Willy sniffed/snorted with laughter all through the play.
2. Whenever I`m tired or nervous, my eyelid starts to twitch/flinch.
3. Sit still and don`t squirm/smirk like that.
4. Who`s Mary fluttering her eyebrows/eyelashes at now?
5. The dentist stopped drilling as soon as he left me flinch/snort.
6. Please don`t titter/sniff - here`s a box of tissues. 

Here are some more verbs associated with manner. What does each set have in common?

1. snigger, chortle, guffaw, giggle.
2. glower, scowl, frown, glare.
3. gawp, ogle, scan, leer.
4. whimper, sniffle, sob your heart out, grizzle. 

V Home assignment

Learn new words. Make a report on the topic: "Body language". Find out more about speech etiquette.

  1. Yana, your lesson is good. You really use all techniques, such as listening, speaking, writing and reading. I like that you have a video for lesson, it's important to use computer and Internet on lessons nowadays. I think such a topic is interesting for students, especially in age of 21-22.   3. The topic of the lesson is very interesting. Yana applied appropriate methods to the age and the proficiency level of students. She proposed different kinds of activities, the best one is the video material. Great job! So, Yana gets 5 point from me!!!

  6. The class consists of quite different tasks, which make the class more dynamic and interesting for students.
    The topic is very intresting, and the choise of the video gives a base for a fruitful discussion..
